LF17M04 Simts raksti tiem, kas meklē gaismu

I'm ready.

In just a few days I will leave for Latvia, to spend the next month and half creating the installation "one hundred signs for those seeking light." I am excited to experience my first long term residency, and to create work on a scale that is, frankly, ambitious for me. I look forward to sharing images of the installation with you later this spring via this newsletter, but if you wish to stay abreast of the installation's progress, please follow me on Instagram (ritagrendze), where I will be posting a photo daily starting on April 1st. And of course, should you happen to be in Riga, Latvia please join me at the Latvian National Library for the opening at 5 p.m. on May 2nd.

The study pictured above was photographed on site at Vedder-Price international offices in Chicago. I am grateful to Patter Hellstrom for curating this placement and for giving me the opportunity to show again with Krista Svalbonas.  I am happy to share that I will be showing similar work at North Eastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL and at the Latvian Center Garezers in Three Rivers, MI this summer, but more on that next time.

Until then, be well!

LF17L19 Archaeology of Nothing – A Commissioned Multimedia Work by Latvian Composer Krists Auznieks

Archaeology of Nothing is an immersive evening-length exploration of the self through music, movement, and visual art. Commissioned by the ensemble Contemporaneous from visionary Latvian composer Krists Auznieks, this project will receive its world premiere in the winter of 2017-2018, performed and presented by Contemporaneous. Integrating Auznieks’s music, the beautiful space of Brooklyn venue National Sawdust, texts selected by the composer, and the work of a collaborating visual artist, Archaeology of Nothing invites the audience to examine the nature of the voice within the self and explore fundamental questions of identity — what is the self, and what makes us each an individual? Auznieks received his BA from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and MM from the Yale School of Music. His latest opera NeoArctic is nominated for the Grand Music Award of Latvia as the show of the year.
